The 22 Carat Snapshot: 25 September 2026
| Measure | 22K (91.6%) | 24K (99.9%) | 18K (75%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Per gram, before GST | ₹13,667 | ₹14,905 | ₹11,190 |
| Per gram, with 3% GST | ₹14,077 | ₹15,352 | ₹11,526 |
| Per 10 grams, before GST | ₹1,36,670 | ₹1,49,050 | ₹1,11,900 |
| Per 10 grams, with 3% GST | ₹1,40,770 | ₹1,53,522 | ₹1,15,257 |
Which row is "the" rate? It depends on which side of the counter you are on. A jeweller selling you new 22K gold charges the GST-inclusive figure plus making charges. A buyer purchasing your old 22K gold starts from the pre-GST figure, because no GST is collected from an individual selling personal jewellery.
Check 1: Is the 22K Figure Consistent With 24K?
22K gold is 916 parts pure in 1,000, so its rate should sit very close to 91.6% of the 24K rate. In the snapshot: ₹13,667 ÷ ₹14,905 = 91.7%. Consistent. Run this check on any 22K quote. If a buyer's 22K figure works out to 88% or 89% of the day's 24K rate, the missing two or three points are their margin, disguised as the rate.

Check 2: How Much Did 22K Move This Week?
| Date (2026) | 22K per gram (pre-GST) | Day change | Change on 10 g |
|---|---|---|---|
| 22 September | ₹13,659 | — | — |
| 23 September | ₹13,618 | −₹41 | −₹410 |
| 24 September | ₹13,532 | −₹86 | −₹860 |
| 25 September | ₹13,667 | +₹135 | +₹1,350 |
The lesson from this week: the rate slipped for two days and then rose by ₹135 a gram in a single day. That one move is worth ₹1,350 on every 10 grams, and about ₹6,750 on a 50-gram family lot. If you are selling without urgency, a few days of watching is time well spent. If you need the money, the difference is small compared with the cost of an unfair valuation.

Why the Jeweller's Board Rate Is Not Your Selling Price
The 22K rate on a Benachity or City Centre showroom board is a selling rate: gold value plus 3% GST, with making charges added on top at billing. When the same shop buys old gold back, it works from gold content alone, and often uses its own buyback rate below the live figure. The gap between the board and the buyback price is where much of Durgapur's confusion about "the" 22K rate comes from.
| Component | You buy new 22K | You sell old 22K |
|---|---|---|
| Gold value at live rate | Paid | Received (on measured purity) |
| 3% GST | Paid | Not applicable |
| Making charges / wastage | Paid (often 8–25%) | Not recovered |
| Stones, lac, enamel | Often charged at gold weight | Deducted from weight |
| Buyer's margin | Built into making | Should be disclosed, e.g. a fixed % |
From 22K Rate to Money in Hand: A Worked Payout
A 10-gram necklace brought to Auriksha: 0.4 g of the weight is lac and small stones, so the net gold weight is 9.6 g. Our XRF reads 91.6%.
- Gold value: ₹14,905 (24K) × 91.6% × 9.6 g = ₹1,31,069
- Less fixed 2% margin and 1% dust-and-wax deduction (3% in total)
- Payout: about ₹1,27,137, paid by IMPS in the same visit
If the same necklace had been stamped 22K but actually read 90.8%, the payout would be about ₹1,26,026, roughly ₹1,100 less. Small on one piece, significant across a whole bag. It is why the "22 carat" in a search result is only a starting point; your own ornament's measured purity is the number that counts.
22 Carat in Bengali Ornaments: What to Expect
- Chur and bala bangles: usually solid or near-solid 22K. Net weight is close to gross weight.
- Sitahar and heavy necklaces: often 22K but with hooks, lac or stones. Expect a weight deduction.
- Shakha-pola bandhano (gold-capped conch or coral bangles): only the thin gold covering counts, which is often a small fraction of the total weight.
- Pre-hallmark ornaments from the KDM years: frequently 22K, but worth testing, as some read a point or two lower.
